Medical Emergencies in the Dental Practice

Training is designed to provide dental
professionals with knowledge and skills in the
provisional diagnosis and management of: - 1. loss of consciousness (fainting, drug
- overdose, stroke and unknown cause);
- 2. chest pain and cardiac arrest;
- 3. low blood sugar;
- 4. fitting;
- 5. bronchospasm associated with asthma,
- chronic obstructive airway disease (COAD)
- and allergies; and
- 6. anaphylaxis.
Techniques and treatment protocols
taught include: - CPR and defi brillation
- advanced airway management using
- Laryngeal Mask Airways (LMAs);
- ventilation using bag/mask/valve ventilators;
- use of oxygen therapy and
- supplementation; and
- the use of drugs including adrenaline,
- Aspirin, Ventolin, Glucodin and
- glyceryltrinitrate spray.
