I am well aware that europe is quite remote place from Australia but it was too tempting for me to resist visiting dental aimed chat on "the other side of the world"...
The educational issue is quite complicated here thanks to EU. Till My year-class, dentists are called stomatologists and they are studying universal medicine for six years whereas last two years were focused on dentistry.
They also have to undergo some attestations after their graduation which takes aproximately 2 years of working at the clinic. When they are over 26 they can stand on their own.
(BTW in our conditions name "dentist" is used for people warking after WWII who learned dentistry by watching the doctors, they had only high shool degree but after-war situation demanded such measures)
I am studying only for five years (I'll be 24) but our studies are more dedicated to dentistry. We will be called dental doctors with working opportunities all over the EU with no need of later attestations (dental surgery, ortodontics excluded).
I assume there is a great divergence abroad. Even when studying I drive at differencies in procedures undertaken here and in the US (e.g. root system filling- foramen anatomicum instead of fysiologicum)
