Crowns

I have a few cracked teeth from a football accident from middle school which was over ten years ago. One of them actually broke last year and now I have a crown there and the other one I can actually see a crack in it. I am very careful about what I eat these days as far as hard candy or tough food and hope to not need another crown anytime soon. Should I just have a crown applied to the cracked tooth now and would this help it last longer or just keep going like I have?
